Step One:
Complete the 24-Hour Driver Education Class

The first step is completing the mandatory classroom portion of driver education.

Step Two:
Apply for a Learner's Permit (Instruction Permit)

Once the initial classroom hours are complete, you can apply for your permit.

Minimum Age: 15 years old.
Requirement: Must have completed at least 6 classroom hours (or the equivalent portion of the online course).
Action: Submit required documents, pass a written exam, pass a vision test, and pay fees to the DPS.

Step Three:
Complete Behind-the-Wheel Training

Permit Requirement: You must hold the permit for at least 6 months before applying for a Provisional License.
Required Training:
- Complete the 14 Hours of In-Car Instruction with a Driving Instructor (7 hours driving instruction + 7 hours observation).
- Complete an additional 30 hours of supervised driving (10 of which must be at night).
Upon finishing all requirements, you will receive a Completion Certificate (DE-964).

Step Four:
Complete the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) Program

This is a mandatory video course completed near the end of the process.

Apply for a Provisional License

Action: Pass the Driving Test at the DPS or an approved third-party Test Provider (like Nova Driving School).

Upgrade to Full License at Age 18
