Step Two:
Apply for a Learner's Permit (Instruction Permit)

Once the initial classroom hours are complete, you can apply for your permit.

  • Minimum Age: 15 years old.
  • Requirement: Must have completed at least 6 classroom hours (or the equivalent portion of the online course).
  • Action: Submit required documents, pass a written exam, pass a vision test, and pay fees to the DPS.

Step Three:
Complete Behind-the-Wheel Training

  • Permit Requirement: You must hold the permit for at least 6 months before applying for a Provisional License.
  • Required Training:
    • Complete the 14 Hours of In-Car Instruction with a Driving Instructor (7 hours driving instruction + 7 hours observation).
    • Complete an additional 30 hours of supervised driving (10 of which must be at night).
  • Upon finishing all requirements, you will receive a Completion Certificate (DE-964).

Step Four:
Complete the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) Program

This is a mandatory video course completed near the end of the process.

  • Important: This certificate must be completed within 90 days of taking the driving skills test.

Step Five:
Apply for a Provisional License
